Data Analyst Interview Questions for Freshers (2026): With Answers

Short answer: a fresher data analyst interview usually mixes four things — Excel, SQL, basic statistics and metrics, and data visualisation — plus a case or behavioural round where you explain how you would approach a real business question. You do not need advanced machine learning; you need to be solid on the fundamentals and able to explain your thinking clearly. Below are common questions with short, honest answers to help you prepare.

Pair this with the tool-specific sets: SQL interview questions for data analysts and Power BI interview questions. If you are still learning the role, follow the data analyst roadmap and build portfolio projects first.

What interviewers check for

Area What they are testing Typical weight
SQL Can you pull and join the right data High
Excel Everyday analysis and lookups Medium
Statistics & metrics Do you understand the numbers you report Medium
Visualisation & BI Can you present findings clearly Medium
Case / behavioural Can you turn a question into an analysis High

For freshers, clear thinking and communication often matter as much as syntax. Explain your reasoning out loud.

SQL questions

What is the difference between WHERE and HAVING?

WHERE filters rows before grouping; HAVING filters groups after a GROUP BY. You use HAVING to filter on an aggregate, for example HAVING COUNT(*) > 5.

What is the difference between an INNER JOIN and a LEFT JOIN?

An INNER JOIN returns only rows that match in both tables; a LEFT JOIN returns all rows from the left table and matching rows from the right, with NULLs where there is no match.

How would you find the second highest value in a column?

Several ways: a subquery with MAX on values below the maximum, or a window function like DENSE_RANK() and then filter for rank 2. Mention that ties change which approach is correct.

What does GROUP BY do?

It collapses rows that share the same values into summary rows so you can apply aggregates like COUNT, SUM or AVG per group — for example total sales per city.

Excel questions

When would you use VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP?

To pull a value from another table by a matching key — for example getting a product price by product ID. XLOOKUP is the newer, more flexible version that also looks to the left and handles “not found” cleanly.

What is a PivotTable used for?

To summarise a large table quickly without formulas — totals and counts by category, such as sales by month or orders by city — and to pivot the view to answer different questions.

How do you remove duplicates or clean data in Excel?

Use Remove Duplicates, TRIM for stray spaces, and functions or Find & Replace to fix inconsistent values. Data cleaning is a big part of a real analyst job.

Statistics and metrics questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

Mean is the average, median is the middle value when sorted, and mode is the most frequent value. The median is more reliable when the data has extreme outliers.

What is an outlier and why does it matter?

A value far from the rest of the data. It can distort averages and mislead decisions, so you check whether it is a genuine signal or a data error before reporting.

How would you explain a metric you do not recognise?

Say honestly that you would check its definition with the team, see how it is calculated, and confirm what decision it supports before using it. Interviewers value this over guessing.

Visualisation and BI questions

Which chart would you use to show a trend over time?

A line chart. Use bar charts to compare categories and avoid pie charts for anything beyond a couple of slices. Match the chart to the question.

What makes a good dashboard?

It answers a clear question at a glance, shows the most important numbers first, avoids clutter, and uses consistent, honest scales. More charts is not better.

Case and behavioural questions

“Sales dropped last month — how would you investigate?”

Clarify the question, then break it down: which products, regions, channels or customer types fell? Compare against previous periods, check for data issues, and form a hypothesis you can test. Interviewers want your structure, not a magic answer.

Tell me about a project you worked on.

Pick a real portfolio project: the question you asked, the data, what you did, and what you found. Keep it to the point and focus on your decisions and the result.

How to prepare

  1. Be fluent in core SQL (joins, GROUP BY, aggregates) and everyday Excel.
  2. Build two or three portfolio projects you can talk through.
  3. Practise explaining your reasoning out loud, not just getting the answer.
  4. Revise the tool-specific question sets before the interview.

Frequently asked questions

What topics come up most in a fresher data-analyst interview?

SQL and Excel are the core, with basic statistics and metrics, data visualisation, and a case or behavioural round where you explain how you would approach a business question. Advanced machine learning is usually not expected.

Do I need to know Python for a data-analyst interview?

Often not for a first role — SQL, Excel and a BI tool are the core. Python is a plus and expected more for data-science roles, but check the specific job description.

How important is the case round?

Very. For freshers, how you break down a vague business question and explain your reasoning often matters as much as exact syntax, because it shows how you would work on the job.

How do I stand out as a fresher?

Have two or three real portfolio projects you can discuss, be genuinely fluent in SQL and Excel, and communicate your thinking clearly. That combination beats memorising answers.
